Gary Smalley Test

Monkey Wrench (song)Image via Wikipedia
Gary Smalley:It was all set up a couple of weeks ago that when the fire truck on which Santa was riding in the Orange Christmas parade reached a certain location, he was going to give me a copy of his proposed route he plans to take on the night of Dec. 24 and some of the gifts he would be delivering.
But alas! the annual Orange Christmas parade was postponed at the last minute due to inclement weather—not rain mind you, but snow of all things.
This really threw a big monkey wrench into the planning of our annual Christmas Korner with the new date set just one week before Christmas Day. And we were worried that Santa wouldn’t know when to secretly sling that list or where it was to take place because the parade route had been altered so dramatically.
We hollered at him as the fire truck was approaching while some of the parade watchers rolled their eyes in disbelief that someone as old as Santa was waving at him like some excited toddler.
It didn’t appear that we got Santa’s attention as he waved to all the thrilled youngsters with one hand and then flipped that precious list behind his back like some NBA superstar with the other.
We unfolded the stack of papers with our cold hands and observed the following names on his list and these corresponding Christmas presents he plans on delivering tomorrow night after all the little kiddies are asleep:
PRO GOLFER TIGER WOODS—A living example of what the Fall of the Roman Empire must have been like.
WEST ORANGE-COVE SCHOOL BOARD—A Breathalyzer to monitor people involved in assisting the economic development of our fair city.
SUNSET GROVE GOLFER BOB HOOD—A big hook to fish out any sportswriter who may be dumb enough to fall out of his boat.
CINCINNATI BENGALS WIDE RECEIVER CHAD OCHOCINCO—A debate over whether he changed his name to match the number 85 he wears on his uniform or merely double his IQ.
WEST ORANGE-STARK HEAD COACH DAN HOOKS—The extra ingredients needed to win another state championship in football.
SILVER SNEAKERS INSTRUCTOR AT BODY WORKZ ELLA MULHOLLAN—A Marine drill instructor uniform to wear while working out her class of senior citizens.
NIKE SPORTING EQUIPMENT COMPANY—Clarification that their motto “Just Do It” shouldn’t be taken so literally by its company spokesperson. Apparently Tiger did it often.
TEXAS LONGHORN FANS—An interpreter to distinguish between the Texas Longhorns football or basketball team when someone talks about their No. 2-ranked undefeated team.
DALLAS COWBOYS—A reprieve for Head Coach Wade Phillips just when owner Jerry Jones was inquiring about a replacement for his nice-guy head coach by tossing around names like Bob Stoops and Bill Cowher until the team did something not many thought they could do—upset the undefeated New Orleans Saints in their own house 24-17 keeping their playoff hopes very much alive.
SUNSET GROVE GOLFER RICHARD DUFFIE—The Mickey Mantle Award for being one of the very few switch-hitting golfers. He drives and chips left-handed but putts right-handed.
AN UNNAMED SOUTHEAST TEXAS COACH—The Lunesta Award for taking the product to eliminate insomnia and now he has nightmares about a lighted green butterfly encircling his bedroom.
FORMER PORT ARTHUR MEMORIAL AND TEXAS LONGHORN STAR RUNNING BACK JAMAAL CHARLES—A thank-you note to former Kansas City Chiefs’ teammate Larry Johnson for acting like an idiot and being dismissed from the team. Now Charles is the featured running back and is having a fine season.
SILVER SNEAKERS PARTICIPANT VERN PENNINGTON—The Methuselah Award for showing up twice a week for the senior citizen’s hour-long exercise program as his 96th birthday looms in January.
PITTSBURGH STEELERS—An Upside Down Trophy for being one of the very few defending NFL World Champions not even playing well enough to be in serious contention for the upcoming playoffs.
LITTLE CYPRESS-MAURICEVILLE FIRST-YEAR HEAD COACH RANDY CROUCH—A button with “Excelsior” inscribed on it meaning onward and upward for his Battlin’ Bears to continue to improve and add more victories in the future.
SUNSET GROVE GOLFER JIM RODDA—“The Man With the Plan” Award for overseeing projects to improve the golf course like the recent construction of the new cart barn and the present project of repairing the bridge.
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS—Although the team’s front office swears the Colts plan to rest the regulars, the team continues to win after already securing their position in the upcoming NFL playoffs. Unless the brass forbids quarterback Peyton Manning from dressing out, his influence on the field will produce a victory because that’s the only thing he knows.
TEXAS LONGHORNS’ HEAD COACH MACK BROWN—His autobiography should be titled “Green With Envy” depicting those UT faculty members who are upset about his recent raise to $5 million plus performance bonuses.  If they put a pencil to the mind-boggling number of hours a college head football coach works plus the fact he has no tenure, maybe they would quit complaining. Besides, the Texas football program generates the money for Brown’s salary.
SOUTHEAST TEXAS—An All-American supplier of college football talent that has produced former West Orange-Stark star Earl Thomas, who was named as the first-team All-American safety for the Texas Longhorns, former Jasper standout Sean Weatherspoon, who was on the second team as Missouri’s middle linebacker and former Newton all-stater Toddland Pendland, who was named as a first-team FCS All-American running back from McNeese.
SUNSET GROVE GOLFER CRAIG COUVILLION—A “Weather Wienie Sock” with a hole in it so he can stick his big toe out the back door to see if the weather is warm enough for him to play golf during these winter months.
LAMAR LADY CARDS BASKETBALL TEAM—Hope that history repeats itself with their current 9-3 record which is the best 12-game mark since their last NCAA Tournament visit in 1990-91 when they also started out 9-3.

A Woman " Knocked Down The Pope " In Christmas Eve Mass

(CNN) -- A woman jumped a barrier at the start of Christmas Eve Mass at St. Peter's Basilica and knocked down the pope, briefly disrupting ceremonies.
Screams erupted from onlooking worshippers when the woman ran toward Pope Benedict XVI and grabbed onto his vestments as he walked down the main aisle of the church, video footage showed.
He was quickly helped to his feet by his aides -- prompting cheers from the crowd -- and the service was resumed, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told CNN.
The woman was removed by Vatican guards, Lombardi said.
John Allen, senior Vatican analyst for CNN, said such security breaches aren't uncommon.
"As compared to say, the president of the United States, the security membrane around the pope is pretty thin and fairly permeable," he said, citing similar past incidents, including one that happened last Christmas Eve.
Watch the Full Pope Knocked Down

A woman jumped the barriers in St. Peter's Basilica and knocked down Pope Benedict XVI at the start of Christmas Eve Mass, but the 82-year-old pontiff got up unhurt and proceeded as planned with Thursday's service.
Witness video obtained by The Associated Press showed a woman dressed in a red hooded sweat shirt vaulting over the wooden barriers that cordoned off the basilica's main aisle and rushing toward the pope before being swarmed by bodyguards.
The video showed the woman grabbing the pope's vestments as she was taken down by guards, with Benedict then falling on top of her.
The commotion occurred as the pope's procession was making its way toward the main altar and shocked gasps rang out among the thousands who packed the basilica. The procession came to a halt, the music stopped and security rushed to the trouble spot.
A Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Ciro Benedettini said the woman appeared to be mentally unstable and had been taken into custody by Vatican police. He said she also knocked down Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, who was taken to hospital for a checkup.
"During the procession an unstable person jumped a barrier and knocked down the Holy Father," Benedettini told The AP by telephone. "(The pope) quickly got up and continued the procession."
It was the second year in a row that there had been a security breach at the Christmas Eve service and this was the most serious incident involving the public in Benedict's five-year papacy. At the end of last year's Mass, a woman who had jumped the barriers got close to the pope but was quickly blocked on the ground by security.
That woman too wore a red hooded sweat shirt, but Benedettini said it was not immediately known if the same person was behind Thursday's incident.
MaryBeth Burns from Paris, Texas, was about four people away from the woman who jumped the barriers and was filming the pope's procession as the commotion started.

Vatican: Pope to appear for Christmas after woman knocks him down; cardinal fractures hip

Pope Benedict XVI DSC00023-1Image by Beyond Forgetting via Flickr
VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI is fine and will appear as planned for his traditional Christmas Day blessing hours after being knocked down by a woman who jumped the barrier at the start of Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican said Friday.
French Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, an 87-year-old Vatican diplomat, fractured his hip in the fall and will be operated on at Rome's Gemelli hospital, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said.
Lombardi identified the woman as Susanna Maiolo, 25, a Swiss-Italian national with psychiatric problems. He said Maiolo, who was not armed, was taken to a clinic for necessary treatment.
The woman jumped the barricade and lunged for the pope as he processed down the aisle toward the altar. As security guards brought her down, she grabbed Benedict's vestments and pulled him down with her, according to witness video obtained by The Associated Press.
With the help of attendants, Benedict stood up and continued to process down the aisle, to the cheers of "Viva il Papa!" ("Long live the pope"). He continued to celebrate the Mass without incident. Lombardi said Benedict's busy Christmas schedule would proceed without change.
Etchegaray's condition was good, he added.
It was the second year in a row that there had been a security breach at the Christmas Eve service and was the first time a potential attacker came into direct contact with Benedict during his five-year papacy. Security analysts have frequently warned the pope is too exposed in his public appearances.
At the end of last year's Mass, a woman who had jumped the barriers got close to the pope but was quickly blocked on the ground by security.
That woman too wore a red hooded sweat shirt, but Benedettini said it was not immediately known if the same person was behind Thursday's incident.
Benedict lost his miter and his staff in the fall. He remained on the ground for a few seconds before being helped back up by attendants.
After getting up, Benedict, flanked by tense bodyguards, resumed his walk to the basilica's main altar to start the Mass. The pope, who broke his right wrist in a fall this summer, appeared unharmed but somewhat shaken and leaned heavily on aides and an armrest as he sat down in his chair.
Benedict made no reference to the disturbance after the service started. As a choir sang, he sprinkled incense on the altar before opening the Mass with the traditional wish for peace in Latin.
There have been other security breaches at the Vatican.
In 2007, during an open-air audience in St. Peter's Square, a mentally unstable German man jumped a security barrier and grabbed the back of the pope's open car before being swarmed by security guards.
Then there was the assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II by Turkish gunman Mehmet Ali Agca in 1981. John Paul suffered a severe abdominal wound as he rode in an open jeep at the start of his weekly audience in the Vatican piazza.
The pope is protected by a combination of Swiss Guards, Vatican police and Italian police.
Since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S., the Vatican has tightened security at events where the pope is present. All visitors must pass by police to get into the square, with those entering the basilica going through metal detectors or being scanned by metal-detecting wands.
However, Sister Samira, an Indian aide to Vatican officials who attended the service and saw the incident, said she is never searched by security when she attends papal Masses, and said the same holds true for other people in religious garb.
In a similar incident, Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi was attacked as he was greeting the crowd at a political rally earlier this month. A man with a history of psychological problems hurled a souvenir statuette at the politician, fracturing his nose and breaking two of his teeth.
Benedict celebrated this year's Christmas Eve Mass two hours earlier than the usual midnight starting time in a move by the Vatican to ease the pontiff's busy holiday schedule.
Benedict has been remarkably healthy during his pontificate, keeping to a busy schedule and travelling around the world.
But in July, he broke his wrist during a late-night fall while vacationing in an Alpine chalet and had to have minor surgery and wear a cast for a month - an episode that highlights the risk he ran in Thursday's tumble.
In his homily, delivered unflappably after the incident, the pope urged the world to "wake up" from selfishness and petty affairs, and find time for God and spiritual matters.
In Bethlehem, thousands of pilgrims from around the world descended on the traditional birthplace of Jesus, for the most upbeat Christmas celebrations the Palestinian town has seen in years.
Hundreds of worshippers packed St. Catherine's Church on Manger Square for morning mass. Most were local Palestinian Christians, and the mass was celebrated in Arabic.

Twitter Was Hacked By “Iranian Cyber Army.”

Updated | 11:19 a.m. As the blogger Michael Arrington reported on TechCrunch, Twitter was apparently attacked on Thursday night by a group identifying itself as the “Iranian Cyber Army.” A leading Iranian opposition Web site was also attacked, apparently by the same group.
The hackers redirected Twitter users to a Web page with the following message:
Iranian Cyber Army
THIS SITE HAS BEEN HACKED BY IRANIAN CYBER ARMY
iRANiAN.CYBER.ARMY@GMAIL.COM
U.S.A. Think They Controlling And Managing Internet By Their Access, But THey Don’t, We Control And Manage Internet By Our Power, So Do Not Try To Stimulation Iranian Peoples To….
NOW WHICH COUNTRY IN EMBARGO LIST? IRAN? USA?
WE PUSH THEM IN EMBARGO LIST ;)
Take Care.
After the attack was fended off late on Thursday in San Francisco, Biz Stone, one of Twitter’s founders, wrote on the company’s official blog:
Twitter’s DNS records were temporarily compromised tonight but have now been fixed. As some noticed, Twitter.com was redirected for a while but API and platform applications were working. We will update with more information and details once we’ve investigated more fully.
Twitter has been an important tool for the opposition movement in Iran this year. Following the disputed presidential election there in June, as the country’s government sought to contain mass protests on the streets and online, threatening messages started to appear on the site from at least one user who claimed to be part of a cyber-unit of the country’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, established to fight enemies of the government.
On both Twitter and the opposition Web site Mowjcamp, the message announcing the attack was accompanied by an image of a green flag. Green has been used in Iran recently as the color of the opposition movement, but it is also a color traditionally associated with Islam.
My colleague Nazila Fathi explains that the writing on the image which is not in English includes a line of Arabic script and the words “Ya Hussein” on the green flag, which is a reference to the prophet Muhammad’s grandson, who is revered in Iran. Further down the screen, there is a poem that says, roughly: ‘We will die if our leader orders us to fight, and if he wants, we will be patient and tolerant.’
On TechCrunch Mr. Arrington also reported that a Google search for Twitter briefly returned a result that said, in place of the site’s name: “This Web Site Has Been Hacked By Iranian Cyber Army.” That message is still appearing on Google for searchers looking for Mowjcamp.
DESCRIPTIONA screenshot showing a Google search result for an Iranian opposition Web site on Friday.
According to one of Mr. Arrington’s sources, while the Google result for Twitter was showing that message in English, it was accompanied by a sub-heading in Persian which said, roughly, “In the name of God, as an Iranian this is a reaction to Twitter’s sly interference which was U.S. authorities ordered in the internal affairs of my country.”
At the height of the post-election demonstrations against Iran’s government in the summer, the State Department asked Twitter to postpone a scheduled interruption of the service for maintenance, after opposition supporters expressed fear that the disruption would interfere with their protests.
Regarding the Web attack on Twitter, Daniel Ionescu wrote on the PC World Web site that it could still turn out to be a hoax by a person or group simply posing as an Iranian group:
The reasoning behind the attack is not known as of yet. The group was previously unknown, and some speculate this attack was carried out by pranksters, rather than pro-Iranian campaigners. Graham Cluley, from the Sophos security firm, writes on his blog that the message posted “does not necessarily mean that hackers from Iran are responsible for the defacement.”
For the non-experts among us, Mr. Cluley explains on his blog:
DNS records work like a telephone book, converting human-readable website names like twitter.com into a sequence of numbers understandable by the internet. What seems to have happened is that someone changed the lookup, so when you entered twitter.com into your browser you were instead taken to a website that wasn’t under Twitter’s control.
At time of writing on Friday morning, Twitter seems to be functioning normally, but the opposition site Mowjcamp remains blocked.
In Iran on Friday, as Reuters reports, supporters of the government attended public rallies the opposition decided to boycott. According to the news agency, pro-government crowds chanted slogans against the leader of country’s opposition, Mir Hussein Moussavi, including, “Death to Moussavi” and “Moussavi should be executed.”
As my colleague Jenna Wortham explains on our technology blog “Bits” this morning:
Not long ago, service outages and interruptions on Twitter were frequent enough that the cutesy graphic of a whale being carried by a flock of birds that appeared when the site was down earned the nickname “Fail Whale” by users.
But in recent months the site has done much better.
The last major outage occurred in August, when a two-pronged wave of attacks crippled the service, leaving it completely inaccessible by users for an entire day.
*A note on the terminology used to describe the attack on Twitter: since several readers complained that it was inaccurate to describe an attack like this one as a “hack,” we altered the headline to match the language already used in the post itself, which did not use that word to describe the attack that temporarily made it impossible to access the site and redirected users to the page set up by the “Cyber Army.”

Your Facebook Details Will Be Indexed By Google !

Facebook, Inc.Image via Wikipedia

There isn't much privacy left in social media. Even when there are privacy settings, such as those that really aren't working on Facebook, nothing you do or say on the web is really private. Facebook fans: prepare to get indexed into the wild world of Google.

People you might not even know, and quite possibly those you never liked, may find you and know more about you than you thought you were sharing. Best to stop saying horrible things about your boss on Facebook -- your pictures, updates and "Are you a drunken sailor" quizzes may just be more searchable than you think.

Web Indexing: A simple way to make information on a web site easier to find.

Right now, unless you set your privacy settings correctly on Facebook, you're wide open to the web and search engines such as Google and Bing. No one at Facebook is really going to tell you how to change that. Instead they've put up a notice that you should check your privacy settings. That doesn't tell you much.

Here's how to stop getting indexed on the web if you can't possibly give up Facebook:

Go to your Facebook profile
Go to the "Settings" page
The click on "Privacy Settings"
Go to "Search"
There is then a toggle switch that gives you the option that allows indexing.
Switch THAT to "NO" immediately or expect the latest news about how much you hate your co-worker to spread all over the web.

Twitter, which recently landed a deal with Bing to index tweets, is now making Facebook want to do the same ... hence the "indexing" madness. So, now instead of having just your insane tweets spread around cyberspace, your Facebook updates will head in that direction, too.

Not a great idea. It might be a good time to change those privacy settings that Facebook has been talking about before the wrong person sees that photo with you with the lampshade on your head.

MTV's Jersey Shore Episodes

MTV's Jersey Shore Episodes  will air December 4rd and profile the "hottest, tannest, craziest Guidos" all in one house. I would embed the trailer video for you, or you could just Click Here to watchh it.
All you really need to know is that it consists of a lot of "if you're a hater, I've got a full time job for you" and a girl who claims she "invented this friggin poof." Insert BumpIt joke here.

Oh, and I'm not even kidding about any of this. This is really happening, and yes, I'm declaring a national emergency against the Shore of New Jersey. That being said, I'd like to call forth everyone in uniform to prepare for attack. This includes armed forces, members of the military, national guard, peace corp, police men, fire fighters, veterans, parole officers, psychiatrists, postal workers, leader dogs for the blind, girl scouts, cub scouts, pizza delivery guys, UPS workers, construction workers, astronauts, catholic school girls, Merry Maids, bus drivers, and chef's to join together and put forth a movement to separate the Jersey shore from the rest of the United States of America. Long live the Guido... on an island far, far away.

Police still waiting to talk to Woods about accident Orlando, FL (Sports Network)

Tiger WoodsImage via Wikipedia
Florida Highway Patrol was unable to speak with Tiger Woods again on Saturday regarding his car accident that occurred in the early hours Friday morning. Woods hit a fire hydrant and then a tree on a neighbor's property as he left his residence around 2:25 a.m. (et) Friday morning. According to reports, Woods' wife, Elin, broke out a window in his SUV and then removed the No. 1 player in the world from the vehicle.
When police arrived, they found Woods on the ground with cuts on his face and blood in his mouth. He was transported to the hospital and released later Friday.
Florida Highway Patrol attempted to speak with Woods early Friday evening, but were told by Elin Woods, that the 14-time major champion was resting. The troopers agreed to return to the residence on Saturday to speak with Woods.
However, that meeting never happened.
"The Florida Highway Patrol has received information that Tiger Woods and his wife were not available to be interviewed as we had previously scheduled," stated Kim Montes, a sergeant with the FHP's Orlando division, in a statement.
"This announcement came from his Woods' agent. Troopers were asked to return on Sunday. This is still an ongoing crash investigation."
Montes also noted that no further information would be released until after the investigation into the crash was complete. The 911 tapes could be released as early as Sunday, but no specific timeline was given on their release.
Woods is scheduled to host and play in the Chevron World Challenge starting on Thursday, December 3. The tournament benefits the Tiger Woods foundation.
There has been no direct comment from the Woods' camp since a brief statement Friday afternoon. He is scheduled to have a press conference on Tuesday regarding the Chevron World Challenge, which he missed last year while rehabilitating from knee surgery.

Video: SMU 95Yard Soccer Goal Hits By a Freshman

An NCAA tournament game between Indiana Univer...Image via Wikipedia
By Chris Chase

Southern Methodist University freshman Ryan Rosenbaum still has a lot of collegiate soccer ahead of him, but he'll be hard pressed to ever score as memorable a goal as he did Wednesday night.

Up 2-1 against No. 16 Tulsa, SMU was on its heels trying to keep the Hurricanes from setting up the equalizer in the 63rd minute of their Conference USA game. Tulsa controlled possession, but an errant pass found the freshman Rosenbaum, who attempted to clear the ball downfield. Things ended up working out slightly better than expected:

The goal, which was kicked from approximately 95 yards out, ended up being the game winner for SMU, who downed the 16th ranked Hurricanes, 3-2. Rosenbaum's kick had plenty of wind behind it (check out the American flag blowing behind the goal) and also benefited from a huge bounce that looked like it came more off concrete than grass.

It wasn't just Rosenbaum's first college goal, it was his first college shot on goal. The Tulsa game was just the fourth in which the freshman from Washington, D.C., had played. As a defender, he's not counted on for offense. Maybe he will be now.

Gaddafi blasts big powers at UN

The leader de facto of Libya, Muammar al-Gaddafi.Image via Wikipedia
LIBYAN leader Muammar Gaddafi had a lot to gripe about. He was jet-lagged. There was no comfortable place to pitch his tent. Some of the diplomats on the floor of the UN General Assembly were distracted.
''Please pay attention!'' he said at one point during his 96-minute speech, his first to the General Assembly in his 40 years as a leader.
Clad in a flowing cloak with a black pin in the shape of Africa sparkling on its front, Mr Gaddafi did not mention the release of convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset al-Megrahi from a Scottish prison last month. His speech veered from harsh denunciations of the invasion of Iraq - the ''mother of all evils'' - to praise for Barack Obama.
His rambling address not only threw the General Assembly's schedule into disarray - he had been allowed 15 minutes - but took in an attempt to tear up a copy of the UN charter, talk of reparations for colonialism and even the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
''I'm jet-lagged,'' he said, complaining he had been awake since 4am and demanding the UN be moved out of the United States, whose security measures were like ''being a prisoner in the Guantanamo camp, where there is no free movement''.
This was presumably a reference to his experiences in Bedford, New York, where he had planned to pitch a large tent for the duration of the General Assembly. After a day of protest by residents, rabbis, human rights groups and families of Lockerbie bombing victims, many waving signs calling him a ''murderer'', the Gaddafi team literally packed their tent after receiving a stop-work order.
It had been on land owned by billionaire Donald Trump and leased to the United Arab Emirates. Mr Gaddafi was believed to have been staying with the Libyan ambassador and planned to use the tent for functions.
Mr Obama and the US team chose not to stay for Mr Gaddafi's speech, but those who did were treated to his views on swine flu (it might have been made by the military in a lab so companies could make money on the vaccine) and to the dictator who styles himself ''King of the Kings of Africa'' calling the US President ''our son Obama''.
Bemused diplomats then heard him suggest that Israel was behind JFK's assassination, because Kennedy wanted to investigate its nuclear plant.
The only comment that seemed to draw support was his critique of the UN Security Council. While his efforts to rename it the ''terror council'' might have been viewed as over the top, the criticism that it is too narrowly based resonated with many.
Mr Gaddafi's idea that membership should be expanded to include a permanent seat for the African Union, Latin America and perhaps someone else - he suggested Australia - hit a chord. ''Maybe we can assign a permanent seat that will be given to them by rotation every six months … perhaps Japan, Australia, maybe outside any union or Australia, or any other country,'' he said.

Gaddafi's UN speech 'radical, detailed': Libyan media

The leader de facto of Libya, Muammar al-Gaddafi.Image via Wikipedia
The Libyan media on Thursday hailed leader Muammer Gaddafi's epic 95-minute speech at the United Nations as radical, detailed and in-depth.

The speech, which has been ridiculed elsewhere as rambling and eccentric - at one point Gaddafi demanded to know who killed president John Kennedy in 1963 - was widely praised by the Libyan domestic media.

On Wednesday night, Gaddafi spoke for nearly 100 minutes - way beyond the allotted time of 15 minutes per speaker - and attacked several UN programmes and demanded reform that would give the General Assembly sole authority.

The Libyan official news agency JANA said that through the speech, Gaddafi presented "radical solutions that can shake the structure of the UN".

The Alshames newspaper said that Gaddafi had presented a "detailed in-depth analysis of the United Nation".

"He amazed people... and gave a 100-minute of final and decisive solutions for problems that started since the first world war," wrote the paper.

During his speech, Gaddafi repeatedly singled out the UN Security Council and veto-wielding permanent members, calling that body a "terror council".

source hindustantimes

When he first arrived at the UN building in New York, Gaddafi scribbled the phrase "we are here" on his seat.

"Today, the voice of Gaddafi is heard all over the world... Today, his thoughts shook the old building of the United Nations and blow up the old minds of a world that lives in the shadows of WWII's outcomes," said the editorial of the daily al-Jamahiriya newspaper.

The editorial said: "For the first time, people throughout the world can breath after leader Muammer Gaddafi's speech in the UN."

Gaddafi said he spoke on behalf of the African Union because Libya currently holds the chairmanship of the organisation. His appearance drew protesters outside the building.

How Serious Is Swine Flu?

Avian Influenza Incidence Tracking Map, Februa...Image by Quiplash! via Flickr
The United Kingdom has become the latest country to confirm cases of the swine flu. At the same time, the World Health Organization has raised its alert level from 3 to 4. With 150 people already killed in Mexico, the WHO revealed that the influenza virus has the sustainability for human-to-human transmission and can cause community level outbreaks.

One can recall a similar outbreak known as bird flu which was more risky than H1N1 virus. According to Professor Neil Ferguson of the World Health Organization, H1N1 is nothing when compared to other similar outbreaks such as SARS or the 1918 Spanish flu.

According to the professor, the evidence is clear that the United Kingdom is headed for a swine influenza pandemic in the coming months. However, it would be difficult to determine the extent of the epidemic since this is usually the time of the year when flu is prominent in the United Kingdom.

It is likewise almost sure that if the H1N1 outbreak disappears in the coming weeks, there might still be an outbreak of the virus in the autumn. If the situation indeed transforms into an epidemic, then 30% - 40% of the general population might become susceptible to infection. Professor Ferguson believes that any outbreak might become longer since the summer season in the United Kingdom is fast approaching.

On the other hand, Sir Liam Donaldson, who is concurrent Chief Medical Officer for England, believes that this new strain of H1N1 virus is something which people has natural immunity and has not received any vaccination yet. For this reason, one becomes susceptible to infection and spread to other people.
However, there is no sufficient information about the virus yet and H1N1 is still a subject of studies by major laboratories in the world. Once there is sufficient information about the virus, only then can it be possible to make improved predictions about individuals who are at higher risk and likely to have serious complications.

At present, the situation in Mexico is creating confusion and it is hard to make a firm a conclusion about what is likely to happen. In any case, there is a need to be ready for any untoward incidents that may happen.

Professor John Oxford, meanwhile, believes that the H1N1 outbreak is not as alarming as the H5N1 bird flu virus. He believes that the country can provide the basic H1N1 immunity for the population. The outbreaks outside of Mexico have not resulted to deaths which is an indication that the virus is not that aggressive.

Aside from that, the summer months is fast approaching so it is less probable for the H1N1 virus to cause an outbreak as well. In any case, the United Kingdom has enough antiviral medicines to treat half of the population.

With this in mind, there is no cause for worry about the H1N1 virus, as it appears that it would cause an outbreak that would be felt all over the world and increase mortality rates.

The outbreak of H1N1 began in Mexico City and as of today has resulted to the death of 42 people and more than 800 confirmed cases of swine flu infection. Although it has now spread in 22 countries, it is believed that this new virus outbreak would not be result to a pandemic and is milder than similar virus infections.

In Dire Need of Swine Flu Vaccine

None - This image is in the public domain and ...Image via Wikipedia
According to the World Health Organization, efforts for developing a swine flu vaccine has been ongoing since the first human case of the virus has been confirmed. Estimates place the initial doses of the vaccine will be administered in 5 to 6 months time.

While people diagnosed with H1N1 virus seems to be headed for recovery, there have been deaths recorded. Aside from that, receiving vaccines for this virus is important particularly the elderly and individuals with a weak immune system, since they are prone to complications such as pneumonia.

Likewise, the vaccine will serve as protection in case the condition persists particularly during the winter months which is the time when influenza is at its peak.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), although they are still incomplete, current evidence shows that seasonal influenza vaccines will provide minimal or no protection against swine flu. Every year, a new batch of flu vaccine is developed and matched with strains that the WHO determines will most probably circulate in the winter months, which happens to be the peak season for influenza outbreaks.

Influenza virus comes in various strains which contains different proteins on their surfaces. The body's immune system can only fight and destroy a virus if they are able to recognize these proteins. It is worth noting that antibodies that recognize one strain may not detect other strains.
Existing vaccines may only offer some protection against swine influenza if the proteins on its surface are identical to strains used to develop previous vaccines. According to the NIBSC, they are trying to determine if the swine flu virus, which is an H1N1 strain of type A influenza, as well as previous H1N1 vaccines match current vaccines.

The preparation of a vaccine commences after a virus develops as they provide the starting point for the production of the vaccine. As such, there is always a time delay while a vaccine is being developed. Preparation of a vaccine involves several steps so it would take several months before a vaccine becomes available.

According to WHO estimates, the virus needed for producing the vaccine will be accessible to vaccine manufacturers by the middle of May while the initial dose for a new vaccine would be ready within 5 to 6 months after that. Waiting time would be much longer if the growth of the vaccine proceeds rapidly.

Vaccination plays a crucial role in the prevention and reduction of the effects of serious conditions. Unfortunately, they are not entirely effective and could lose its effectiveness if the virus mutates.
Existing flu vaccines are valid for about one year and are 70% - 80% effective against transmission with strains of influenza virus that are identical to strains used in the production of vaccines.

The WHO believes that it is too early to tell how the A(H1N1) virus would change. It is closely monitoring any changes in the virus and this would help countries quickly react to any important changes that the virus may show.

Vaccines help the body combat certain diseases in case an individual becomes afflicted with the illness in the future. On the other hand, an antiviral drug is used on people who is already infected with a virus. Although they work in various ways, they generally work to prevent the virus from spreading to different cells in the body.

Swine flu vaccines are administered prior to exposure to a virus so they would be protected from that agent. Antivirals only work if administered within a certain period of time before or after they are exposed to the virus.

How To Keep Yourself from Being Infected With Swine Flu

Viral pharyngitis. The oropharynx is swollen a...Image via Wikipedia
Swine flu is an illness which derives its name from a virus that infects pigs. While the virus cannot affect people, they are likely to get an infection from time to time. The virus is communicable and can be transmitted from one person to another.

The symptoms of swine flu are like those manifested in a regular flu and may include cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, fever, chills and fatigue.

The H1N1 virus continues to become widespread in the United States. The Center for Disease Control believes that the number of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths will continue within the coming days and weeks.

The Center for Disease Control is aggressively responding to the growing outbreak. The objective of the agency is to curb the spread and severity of the illness as well as to inform health care providers, public health officials, and the general public to fend off the challenge by the medical crisis. Likewise, the CDC is giving interim guidance on a daily basis as a response to the rapidly growing crisis.

For treating swine flu, there are antiviral medicines that can be administered. So far, oseltamivir, amantadine, rimantadine, and zanamivir are the approved drugs for swine influenza treatment in the United States.
However, amantadine and rimantadine will not work against swine flu as the H1N1 virus was found to be resistant against these medicines. Laboratory procedures, on the other hand, have proven that H1N1 is susceptible to oseltavimir and zanavimir.

Using antiviral drugs in the treatment of swine influenza works by making your illness milder and making you feel relieved earlier than expected. Aside from that, antiviral medicines prevent the onset of serious complications.

Antiviral medicines are most effective when administered after the onset of the illness usually within a couple of days. However, it should be considered two days after the onset of symptoms, especially for hospitalized patients or those at greater risk for influenza-related complications.

Administration of anti viral drugs is also useful in preventing influenza when given to an individual who is not sick but has exposed to a person with swine influenza.

It can reduce the possibility of infection by 70% to 90%. The duration of intake will be determined by the condition of the patient. Currently, there are no accessible vaccines for protecting against H1N1.

In order to keep yourself from getting infected by the virus, here are some of the things that can be done:

- Keep yourself informed about H1N1. You can visit the official website of the World Health Organization or check brochures from local hospitals or medical facilities.
- Since the influenza virus can be transmitted from one person to another through coughing or sneezing, you can keep yourself busy by doing the following:

- When coughing or sneezing, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue. After using the tissue, dispose of it and throw it in the trash.
- Wash your hands with soap and water after coughing and sneezing. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers whenever necessary.
- To prevent germs from spreading, refrain from touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.
- If you become ill, the CDC recommends that you avoid contact with other people at work or school so as not to infect them.
- Comply with public health advice concerning school closures, crowd avoidance, and social distancing efforts.

As far as swine flu is concerned, health authorities are doing everything they can to prevent the outbreak of another deadly virus.
